south carolina, senator jim demint. it seems rather sudden. amy, why do you think it's happening now? >> i don't know. i think that's something ed can speak to a little better. he covers congress. >> ed, jump in. >> don't worry about it. he was slated to become the republican on the congress committee. he had to get out now or else he would have to put together a staff. made sense for him to go now. secondly, leaving and essentially announcing it now gives the governor enough time over the next few weeks to make a decision who to put in. he made it clear he wasn't running for election when he was up in 2016. there were some rumblings he would leave early. some people do this when they announce they aren't running again. sets up a fantastic scenario for republicans. all the talk around tim scott. he's a congressman, a black republican, very conservative. what would it say that the state that once elected strom thurmond to the senate would potentially have the only black man in the senate and he just so happens is a republican. you would put potentially tim scott in the senate, have hi

the surprising resignation of tea party favorite jim demint. it seems kind of sudden. why now? >> everybody was surprised about this. but i seems in the aftermath of the election the republicans are still in the minority of the senate. demint was in the minority of the minority. that's not a very powerful place to be. demint always known as a bomb thrower, someone who liked to make trouble. he figured he's probably correct about this he could have more power and influence and be less restrained from the outside advocating for his ideas which has also been his first priority. >> david, what about congressman tim scott? that's a person most being talked up as a replacement. why if so if it's true? >> although he's just finishing his first term in the house, he has a lot of support from the tea party but also he worked well on the establishment on the republican side. john boehner tapped him to be one of the young leaders. i think there's also the factor he's african-american. there's no other african americans in the senate. he'd be the only one i think the republican side in congress. at a t

have slammed boehner's plan. jim demint obviously among them. do you think john boehner is the guy who's going to get this done? is he going to be able to lead your party to consensus? >> i don't know the answer to that question. what he's trying to do is to mitigate the damage that obama would do with these massive increases in rates. impasse is not an option. means everybody's taxes go up, but if the president has his way, taxes are going to go up on those very wealthy folks making over 200,000, but most are small businesses filing a subchapter s companies, about 88% of net small business income will be for these taxes when we're depending on them to create two-thirds of the new jobs. boehner's trying to mitigate that mess. i wish him luck. something's going to f to have to give. >> from everything i've heard is that we are realistically, there's two options for country. one, go over the cliff. the other, extend the bush tax cuts for the 98% of americans. everyone who makes under $200,000 a year if they're single. those seem to be the two choices. between those, which do you pick? >>

, senator lindsey graham pays tribute to the outgoingdent senator. jim demint this morning and to say i was stunned was an understatement. jim indicated to me that he will be retiring from the senate next year and taking over the presidency o of the heritage foundation, one of the great conservative think-tanks here in washington. my reaction for the people of south carolina is you've lost a great, strong, conservative voice, someone who has championed the conservative cause and represented our state with distinction, sincerity and -- and a great deal of passion. on a personal level, i've lost my colleague and friend. jim and i've known each other for almost 20 years now and i think we've done a pretty darned good job for south carolina. at times playing the good cop, the bad cop, but always -- always trying to work together. and what differences we've had have been sincere, and that's the word i would use about senator demint. he sincerely believes in his cause. he's a -- he sincerely believes in his causes. he's a sincere voice that people in our party look to for leadership and guida
